Elle tient sur ses genoux le Christ Enfant nu, b\u00e9nissant de la main droite et tenant un orbe dans la main gauche. \r\nLa sc\u00e8ne prend place dans un int\u00e9rieur au sol carrel\u00e9, ceint par des colonnes de marbres vari\u00e9s surmont\u00e9es de chapiteaux, dont certains sont ornementaux et d\u0027autres histori\u00e9s, figurant des sc\u00e8nes de l\u0027Ancien Testament. Les baies des bas-c\u00f4t\u00e9s sont vitr\u00e9es de cives et des plaques de marbre sont incrust\u00e9es dans leur soubassement.\r\nL\u0027espace o\u00f9 se trouvent les protagonistes est ouvert au fond par trois arcades sur un fond de paysage miniaturis\u00e9 repr\u00e9sentant en plans successifs un jardin, une ville puis la campagne et des montagnes. \r\nDans le jardin, on trouve plusieurs essences de fleurs (lys, \u00e9glantines, pivoines, bleuets, iris) et des animaux, notamment des pies et des paons. Deux personnages repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s de dos se penchent depuis ce jardin vers la rivi\u00e8re qui s\u00e9pare en deux la ville de l\u0027arri\u00e8re-plan. \r\nUn pont relie les deux rives de cette ville, entre lesquelles se trouve une \u00eele abritant un petit ch\u00e2teau. La rive situ\u00e9e \u00e0 gauche du panneau comporte un b\u00e2ti plut\u00f4t modeste, tandis que celle de droite est plus dense, h\u00e9riss\u00e9e de clochers. Cette ville dont de nombreux \u00e9difices sont peints tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment et o\u00f9 l\u0027on voit des habitants d\u00e9ambuler n\u0027a jamais pu \u00eatre identifi\u00e9e avec une ville r\u00e9elle. Le panneau est d\u00e9crit pour la premi\u00e8re fois en 1748 dans l\u0027\u00e9glise Notre-Dame-du-Ch\u00e2tel \u00e0 Autun par un visiteur anonyme qui relate une visite de 1705. Il est \u00e0 nouveau d\u00e9crit au m\u00eame endroit en 1778 et 1785. Le panneau est saisi \u00e0 la R\u00e9volution et d\u00e9pos\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole centrale d\u2019Autun, o\u00f9 il est s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 (avec un tableau de Fra Bartolomeo, \u00e9galement transf\u00e9r\u00e9 au Louvre, INV 97) par Alexandre Lenoir pour le Louvre, o\u00f9 il entre en 1800.\r\n\r\nCe panneau a peut-\u00eatre \u00e9t\u00e9 command\u00e9 par Nicolas Rolin pour lui servir de support de pri\u00e8re mobile de son vivant, puis apr\u00e8s sa mort en 1462 de tableau \u00e9pitaphe dans la chapelle Saint-S\u00e9bastien de l\u2019\u00e9glise Notre-Dame-du-Ch\u00e2tel \u00e0 Autun.
