An Experimental Recommendation Engine

The web development agency Kernix, in partnership with the Musée du Louvre, was selected in 2022 following a call for proposals launched jointly by the French and Quebec ministries of culture to promote the discoverability of French-language cultural content. ‘Discoverability’, or ‘findability’, is a neologism that refers to the ease with which a product or service can be found by users in a mass of data and platforms.

The teams at Kernix have worked closely with the museum to develop an innovative recommendation engine based on the data in the collections.louvre.fr database. The goal of this engine is to use similarity criteria to make relevant recommendations of artwork entries, as well as to promote the discovery of significant artworks that are representative of the museum's collections, and lesser known to the general public.

For this project, Kernix has produced an innovative recommendation engine technology that draws on a number of different criteria :

  • Exploitation of textual data using a language model

  • Set rules, developed in consultation with the museum, taking into account the diversity and heterogeneity of the data on the collections.louvre.fr site, which features the collections of the nine departments of the museum, as well as the History of the Louvre Division and the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix.

The recommendation engine will undergo two months of testing, followed by an evaluation to determine the algorithm’s usefulness and relevance for disseminating artworks and exploring the collections.
