Traditionnellement donné à Andrea del Sarto, ce dessin a été reclassé à Fra Bartolomeo par R. Bacou en 1979 (voir note ms dans l'Inv. ms du Cabinet des Dessins). Il a été identifié par B. Berenson (1903) comme une étude de Fra Bartolomeo pour la figure de Saint Barthélemy représenté dans ' Le Mariage mystique de sainte Catherine' (Pala Pitti, 1512), à Florence (Galleria Palatina di Palazzo Pitti, inv. 1912, n°208), et l'a rapproché de plusieurs autres esquisses exécutées par le maître pour cette même figure (Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi, n. 1141 E, 1281 E, 407 F ; Vienne, Albertina, inv. Nr.4875).
