Commentaire :
Sur une feuille de papier bleu, avec un crayon finement taillé, Flandrin a dessiné une vue de la partie ouest du Forum : à droite, au premier plan, la colonne Phocas, au second plan, l'arc de triomphe de Septime Sévère. Au fond à gauche, on voit le palais des Sénateurs construit sur l'antique Tabularium et à droite, par-dessus les toits, l'église Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Paul Flandrin séjourna en Italie de 1833 à 1838, se consacrant à l'étude du paysage pur et réalisant de nombreuses vues de la Ville Eternelle. ('Souvenirs de voyages', 1992)
