Commentaire :
Donné à Correggio depuis His de la Salle, ce dessin a été reclassé à Bernardino Gatti en suivant une proposition d'A. E. Popham ('Correggio's Drawings', Londres, 1957, n° A-109 p. 191), qui l'a identifié comme une étude préparatoire pour la figure de sainte Catherine agenouillée dans une peinture représentant 'Le Mariage mystique de sainte Catherine' conservée à Brocklesby Park (collection du comte Yarborough, repr. dans Ibidem, p. 121 fig. 58). Cette oeuvre, et toutes les études qui y sont en relation (British Museum, inv. 1895-9-15-734, 1854-6-28-103 et Ff. I-78 et notre dessin), a ensuite été attribuée à Giorgio Gandini del Grano par K. Oberhuber ('Drawings by Artists Working in Parma in the Sixteenth Century', Master Drawings, vol. VIII, n° 3, automne, 1970, p. 276-287) suivi, dans son avis, par D. De Grazia (cat. exp. Correggio and his Legacy. Sixteenth Century Emilian Drawings, Washington-Parme, 1984, p. 184-185, 186 notes 12 et 15, p. 188 note 4). M. Di Giampaolo (dans cat. exp. Il Parmigianino e il fascino di Parma, Florence, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi LXXXIX, 2003, sous n° 71) a aussi confirmé l'attribution à Giorgio Gandini del Grano de notre dessin suite à la comparaison avec une étude donnée à ce même artiste, conservée à Florence (Galleria degli Uffizi, GDSU, inv. 1957F), qui présente les mêmes problématiques d'attribution.
