La scène représente Hamlet et Guildenstern dans l'acte III, scène 2 d'Hamlet de Shakespeare,et reproduit en sens inverse la lithographie faisant partie d'une série de 16 auxquelles Delacroix travailla de 1834 à 1843, dont les pierres sont aujourd'hui conservées au Musée Delacroix.
