D'après Johnson (1985), il s'agit du dessin préparatoire au Portrait de Rabelais (1833, Salon de 1834), dont le modèle est un portrait imaginaire de Rabelais, autrefois attribué à Léonard de Vinci, qui était au Louvre à l'époque de Delacroix et se trouve aujourd'hui à Versailles.
