Commentaire :
Déjà considéré comme une projet pour une composition non identifiée, à dater vers 1600 (cat. exp. 'Donation Paul-Frantz Marcou, Jean et Valentine Trouvelot', Paris, 1981, n° 30), dont la partie centrale aurait été reprise par un élève ou un imitateur de Vanni (voir F. Viatte, 'Musée du Louvre. Inventaire général des dessins italiens. III: Dessins toscans XVIe-XVIIIe siècles, t. I: 1560-1640', Paris, 1988, n° 550), ce dessin a été identifié par P. Betti (in 'La pittura a Lucca nel primo seicento', Lucques, 1994, p. 133-134) comme une étude pour le 'Crucifix qui parle avec saint Thomas d'Aquin' peint par Francesco Vanni en 1602 pour le deuxième autel gauche de l'église de San Romano, à Lucques.
