L'armée de Silésie marchant sur Paris, avait déjà atteint la Ferté-sous-Jouarre. L'empereur Napoléon attaque et détruit à Champaubert le corps d'Alsusiew, qui lie la réserve de Blücher placée à Etoges avec Sacken et York. Le lendemain, il bat ces deux généraux à Montmirail.
