Rentré au Louvre avec une attribution à Boccaccio Boccacino due à Ph. Pouncey (1969), ce dessin avait auparavant été rapproché par M. Gregori (1967) du milieu crémonais du XVIe siècle. D. Cordellier (dans cat. exp. De la Renaissance à l'âge baroque : Une collection de dessins italiens pour les musées de France, Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2005, p. 17 n° 3) a proposé l'attribution à Francesco Bonsignori par comparaison avec une feuille de l'artiste conservée à Dublin (The National Gallery of Ireland, inv. 2019), représentant le 'Portrait de Francesco Gonzaga, marquis de Mantoue'.
