Schongauer a gravé deux versions de la Nativité. La plus ancienne est une oeuvre de jeunesse appartenant à la série relative aux joies et aux douleurs de la Vierge. Elle représente une Adoration des bergers où l'artiste donne une grande importance à l'architecture (188 LR) (M. Lehrs, Geschichte und Kritischer Katalog des Deutschen, Niederländischen und Französischen Kupferstiches im XV. Jahrhundert, Vienne, 1925, V, n°5 ). (P. Jean-Richard in 'Graveurs allemands du XVe siècle', Paris, Musée du Louvre, octobre 1991- janvier 1992, p.57, n°32).
