Commentaire :
A l'opposé du saint Sébastien gravé vers 1499, imberbe et gracile, Dürer le représente ici sous les traits d'un homme barbu et mûr. A peine porté par ses jambes (à la pilosité bien marquée), le corps du saint, malgré une impression de robustesse, semble s'affaisser sous le poids du martyre. Sa silhouette n'est pas sans nous rappeler le modèle antique du supplice de Marsyas suspendu à un pin.
