Commentaire :
La profusion de détails et la complexité de l'occupation des anges dans l'espace permettent de comprendre le choix maniériste de l'artiste dans ses premières oeuvres qui suivront son établissement à Wittenberg. Depuis 1501, Cranach se retourne vers le paysage comme un élément qui constitue son nouveau langage plastique (P. Torres in cat. exp. 'Luzes do Norte; Desenhos e gravuras do Renascimento Alemão na Coleção Edmond de Rothschild', Sao Paulo, MASP, 2012, p. 117 et 121).
