Il s'agit d'une des bornes que la ville d'Amsterdam plaçait dans un rayon d'une lieue des fortifications de la ville pour marquer la limite de sa juridiction. Celle-ci est placée sur la digue menant vers Haarlem à l'endroit dit Spieringhorn. (P.Jean-Richard in 'Les plus belles aux-fortes de Rembrandt choisies dans les quatre principales collections de Paris', Musée du Louvre, 1969, p. 41, n°73)
