Cette estampe de Marcantonio a la même taille et les mêmes dimensions que le modello de G. Penni -conservé aujourd'hui au Petit Palais-, lui même réalisé d'après le projet de Raphaël pour l'église de San Giovanni in Monte de Bologne. Tout comme la Pietà, cette composition de Sainte Cécile fut probablement réalisée à partir du tracé inversé du modello. Pour P. Joannides, Marcantonio améliore le modello de Penni, et pense que la gravure est antérieure à la peinture de Raphaël (in 'Marcantonio Raimondi, Raphael and the image multiplied', Manchester University, 2016, n° 82, p. 218 à 219 (épreuve The Fitzwilliam Museum).
