Cette estampe fut réalisée à partir d'un relief d'un sarcophage roman conservé aujourd'hui dans le Museo Archeologico nazionale de Naples (Inv. 27710) qui était autrefois dans les jardins du Palazzo Venezia où Marcantonio l'aurait vu pendant son séjour à Rome. (B. Furlotti, in 'Marcantonio Raimondi, Raphael and the image multiplied', Manchester University, 2016, n° 83, p. 221 (épreuve The British Museum).
