Commentaire :
Dans son journal de voyage aux Pays-Bas, l'artiste écrit à Anvers le 18 août 1520 'Hans Pfaffroth m'a donné un florin Philippe pour son portrait à la pierre noire'. Dürer aurait pu réaliser cette copie dans un carnet de quatorze études à la plume, pour garder le souvenir du portrait original (P. Jean-Richard, 1991).
« Hans Pfaffrot travaillait pour le facteur Francisco Pesao qui lui avait demandé de récupérer les marchandises confisquées aux marchands portugais par leurs homologues de Dantzig à Reval. En août 1520 Pfaffrot repartit à Anvers et c'est là que Dürer fit son portrait à la pierre noire » (P. van den Brink, 2021).
