D'abord identifié à Jacob Muffel et ensuite à Georg III von Limbourg ou bien à Konrad Peutinger, M. Mende (1982, fig. 1, 3, 4 et 6) avance le nom de Kaspar Nützel, patricien et conseiller à Nuremberg, pour identifier l'homme de ce portrait en se basant sur des comparaisons avec des oeuvres peintes ou gravées et grâce aussi à un dessin conservé à Munich qui représente le même personnage (P. Jean Richard, dans cat. exp. Dessins de Dürer et de la Renaissance germanique, Paris, musée du Louvre, 1991-1992, n° 60, p. 67)
