Commentaire :
H. Hollstein in 'German engravings, etchings and woodcuts, 1400-1700, Vol. I, Achen-Altdorfer, p. 13 et 39, repr. 21 repertorie cette oeuvre comme faisant partie de la suite des gravures sur l'histoire de Joseph et l'intitule 'Joseph fait vendre du blé à ses frères'. Par contre, in The New Hollstein, 'Heinrich Aldegrever' German engravings, etchings and woodcuts, 1400-1700, 1998, p. 58, repr. 43A). l'iconographie est replacé dans l'histoire du fils prodigue, dans la reclamation de son héritage et son départ.
Divers tirages sont conservés à Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Bremen, Brunswick, Cambridge, Cobourg, Erlangen, Karlsruhe, Londres, Munich, Münster, Nuremberg, Paris, Vienne, Varsovie et Wolfegg.
Bartsch VIII, p. 367 et Schmidt 55 mentionnent une copie anonyme, en contrepartie, avec un monogramme en contrepartie et sans date: Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, erlangen, Londres, Vienne.
