Selon G. R. Goldner (in cat. exp. The Drawings of Filippino Lippi and his Circle, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1997-1998, n° 14), il pourrait s'agir d'une première pensée pour la figure d'homme assis endormi représentée dans le 'Saint Pierre délivré de prison', fresque de la Cappella Brancacci, à Florence (Santa Maria del Carmine).
