Cette oeuvre fait partie d'une suite de treize planches appartenant à la deuxième période de l'artiste qui répresentent les Apôtres et le Christ debout. Il existe une copie gravée, avec le nom S. Matheus, par I. van Meckenem (Lehrs, 1910, II, n° 123a, Hollstein, 1986, XXIV, p. 110, n°269 et XXIV A, repr.) Veit Stoss sculptera ce type d'homme mûr, aux longs cheveux, la mèche sur le front, à la barbe bifide et aux sourcils froncés dans un Saint André pour l'église Saint Sebald à Nuremberg. (P.
