Commentaire :
De mêmes dimensions que Saint Jacques le majeur combattant les Infidèles à Clavijo (221 LR), cette oeuvre est la plus importante et célèbre du maître. Elle a peut-être été inspirée d'une peinture aujourd'hui disparue de Jan van Eyck. Le M du monogramme commence à prendre ici sa forme définitive. Lehrs mentionne six copies gravées, dont deux avec le monogramme AG et IC (Bartsch illustré, 1981, 9, p. 330, n°15, repr. et p. 390, n°13, repr.) et une autre, en contrepartie, par I. van Meckenem (Hollstein, 1986, XXIV, p. 11, n°32, et XXIV A, p. 13, repr.). Un dessin exécuté d'après l'estampe est conservé au Cabinet des Dessins (Inv.18788). (P.
