Commentaire :
Gravé par A. Sadeler d'après un tableau de B. Spranger peint vers 1597 pour Rodolphe II (Vienne, Kunsthistorisches Museum). Cette gravure appartient à une série d'allégories magnifiant l'empereur Rodolphe II, grand protecteur des arts.

Sur le piédestal : 'B[artholomaeus] Spranger invent[or] Eg[idius] Sadeler sculp[sit]'; sous la composition au centre: 'INSCIVS NON HONORABITUR' (L'ignorant ne sera pas honoré); à gauche: 'Non datur; eximias veneretur ut INSCIVS ARTES, / Solus eas quaerens noscere gestit AMOR' (Il n'est pas admis que les ignorants aient de l'admiration pour les beaux-arts. Seul l'amour qui les recherche ardemment désire les apprendre); à droite: 'Sed datur; ut spretâ iaceat calcatus ab ARTE / INSCIVS, et solido cassus honore ruat' (Mais il est admis que l'ignorant se couche, piétiné par l'art éconduit, et qu'il tombe privé de l'honneur véritable).
